A Great Magento Resource

I am still enthralled by Magento, but have slowed down considerably since first downloading it. As I said before, it’s a much steeper learning curve than WordPress, or just about any other opensource application that I’ve tinkered around with!

That’s why I’m happy that the Digital Surgeons at ExploreMagento.com have started a blog that will hopefully address many of my questions about this awesome software!

I also very much like the way they are displaying comment numbers, with the little callout background – an idea I’m going to appropriate for my next theme release!

I just LOVE the Net!

Hi, I’m an old hand at WordPress, have even designed, or rather redesigned WordPress MU themes.

How long do you think will it take to get your head round the themes and CSS of Magento from scratch?

How long do you think will it take to install and customise a version. Please assume all my time is free.

I forgot to add, that I know my CSS and HTML rather well.

Well, because I was trying to create a liquid theme that didn’t give a horizontal scroll in smaller resolutions, it took me quite a while. I only got halfway through my project when I shelved it, due to issues other than Magento, though.

Now, in retrospect, I would recommend that one read ALL the available documentation, then read it again. It’s a lot more complicated than WordPress, MUCH. There is a comprehensive user guide written by a German fellow, but I don’t speak German!

So my answer would be – a few days if you work with the default fixed width (which I believe is 1024 or 980 pixels), and more than a few if you try to alter that and have to comb through countless bits of style and html.

I would be interested to see what you came up with, Wessel, please do post when you complete your Magento theme. :D

    Hi
I have just got to grips with WordPress but would like to have a snazzier design. I do have HTML experience and some CSS so I am hoping this could be an option for me

This is sad, and I hate to admit this but I have just found out about Magento… I will be telling others about it though, you dont have to worry about that. Thanks for recommending DS.. I will have to check them out
